Media, Broadcast and Published Commentary

Interviews, broadcast segments and published commentary across more than a decade. Newsrooms book an active shooter expert when a story is already moving and the questions have to be answered on air.

Newsrooms call after something has already happened. That is the nature of it. The question is almost always the same, and it is almost always the wrong one: what should people have done once the shooting started. That question, and the research behind the better one, is the subject of the Mackenzie Institute and the active shooter phenomenon.

I answer that question, and then I try to move the conversation to the part nobody films, which is the months beforehand when the behaviour was visible and no one had a process for it. That is the whole reason I keep taking the calls.

Where the work has appeared

More than 1,200 television interviews, and more than 1,500 speaking engagements, across outlets that agree on very little else.

United States FOX, CNN
International BBC, France 24, CGTN, RT
Radio and long form National and regional programmes, including the segments listed below
Print Letter to the Editor, The New York Times

Why an active shooter expert gets invited back

Being booked once means a producer found your name. Being booked again means the segment worked. Across more than a decade the same networks have called back, and they do not share a politics between them.

That is deliberate on my side too. Prevention is not a partisan subject. Evil does not discriminate, and neither do I. Any position that makes half the room stop listening makes the work less effective, so I do not take one.

On the record elsewhere

Testimony in 2002 at the Hart Senate Office Building, convened by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, before members of House Ways and Means and Representative Peter King’s joint Department of Homeland Security committee. Post 9/11 work as a terrorism analyst at CSIS alongside Dr. Bill Taylor, and a briefing to the National Security Council. Advised the Mackenzie Institute in Canada.

Published work includes Law Enforcement Standards for Active Shooter Response, Quick Series.
