Independent CEO Lessons Learned

One step at a time, toward Destination #NEVERHERE Independent CEO Lessons Learned

Fourteen years of building something that no one saw but you. Fourteen years of chasing a vision while holding your breath, tightening your belt, and wondering if you could survive just one more day, 14 years later…

That’s 14 years of lessons learned over the past 14 years of grit, determination, consistency, believing in yourself when no one else did, recognizing who is an ally, who is a foe, and who is just in it for themselves. What decision to make when all the good decisions are taken, how do you make the right one? What is the “best” BAD DECISION, and that is just a few of the exceptional lessons entrepreneurship has taught me on the road to becoming an independent CEO.

The Road That Breaks You and Builds You

The truth is, I almost lost everything more than once. There were days when expenses felt like a mountain I could never climb. Days, weeks, months when my health failed, when family life pulled me in directions I wasn’t sure I could handle, it was the discipline of consistency that kept me on the road to Destination #NEVERHERE as the nation’s most recognized “Active Shooter Expert.”

There is one thing that separates dreamers from doers, beyond just showing up, especially when it’s hard, and that is the consistency to do things even when you don’t see the immediate results, or extended periods of time when nothing is happening. It takes the belief that everything is working like a seed planted in dirt and fertilizer, taking its time to grow, and the faith to know it will. Keep going, keep watering, and keep nurturing yourself and your vision. Just be sure there is a cost, and it is usually betting it all, and most of the time, not winning the way you think you should.

You Don’t Lead to Be Seen. You Lead to Serve.

Being a CEO doesn’t mean standing at the top and pointing directions. It means sweeping floors when no one’s watching. It means learning from losses, adapting, and leading from the middle when the front feels too exposed.

It means letting humility guide your confidence. I wasn’t building a business. It was a lot of “us” who have been building a legacy of prevention, a standard of safety, a path that leads families, communities, and leaders toward hope and away from fear.

A Life That Means Something

I’ve stood under fire, both metaphorically and literally. I’ve watched everything I worked for teeter on the edge. And I’ve come back stronger, not because I’m fearless, but because fear no longer controls me.

If you’re on this path, remember:

  • You don’t need to be the loudest to be a leader.
  • You don’t need to be perfect to win.
  • And you don’t need anyone’s permission to chase a purpose.

Stand up. Step forward. Keep going. Because the world doesn’t just need CEOs it needs leaders who show what resilience looks like.

We’re on the journey. This is what it looks like to build something that lasts. One step at a time, toward Destination #NEVERHERE.
